TO ALL WRITERS AUTHORS AND WANNABES
Imagine writing the last word in your book.
Then saving it in a folder on your computer.
Maybe three years go by, maybe ten years...
Stop imagining that, it’s sad.
Dream about writing the last word in your book.
Importing the manuscript into Adobe InDesign.
Typesetting the entire book in a day. Beautifully.
Uploading it to KDP that evening.
How amazing would it feel?
Even talented creative well trained designers struggle to typeset books because they lack a critical skill - coding.
Let’s borrow from the web design world. When creating a website there are two distinct phases.
Design (wireframes, photoshopped designs)
Coding (building the site).
The correct way to typeset a book is the reverse.
Coding (classifying each piece of content as: body text, chapter heading, chapter number, emphasis paragraph, etc)
Design (applying a style to each piece of content).
Want to be able to typeset books?
Fast and beautifully?
There is a specific sequence to follow that lets book designers typeset fast and beautifully.
This sequence is the hidden key that design universities don’t teach - when you get your design degree you are getting a generalist degree. My students don’t learn generic design from me, they simply learn how to typeset books efficiently.
Learn the smartisfast typesetting process.
I founded a book printing company in Auckland, New Zealand, back in 2013. Very quickly I got frustrated printing ugly self-published books.
So I started offering book design. At first my designs were quite ugly too - but not as ugly as my customers :)
After several years, I discovered I had a talent for typesetting books. Being a process driven individual with an unusual ability to zoom out and break down projects I realised I had developed an amazing process for typesetting books.
I began typesetting entire novels in a matter of hours, making myself a tidy sum of money each time.
Fast forward to 2020, I have sold the business and am no longer a practising book designer.
Negative feedback stopped me for years.
In 2016 after running a 4-hour workshop where I taught students (face to face) how to design books I got a lot of wonderful positive feedback - and some very consistent negative feedback. The negative feedback said, there was too much content, covered too quickly.
Just like there is a right way to typeset a book, there is a right way to teach book design. Step by step, at the students pace.
Introducing smartisfast typesetting school.
An easy to follow typesetting school.
Learn the correct process to typesetting a book that frees up your time to design it, that ensures consistency, and makes the job fast.
Speed. Following the process removes 10s of hours of rework.
Creativity. As students learn to seperate the coding from design it frees up their mind and time which provides the opportunity for creative ideas.
Consistency. The biggest (and extremely common) ‘tell’ self-published books have is a lack of consistency - avoid it by following the process.
