One of my kids came home with a team challenge from school: build a raft. I explained that if they all vote for the best idea, which was the plan from my house, they’ll be left with a one brain idea. Whereas if they take the best parts of different ideas, they’d end up with something better than any of them could have made individually. True story. The vote would have gone our way, the best plan on the table was ours, and I was coaching my own kid to give the win up. I was already teaching a child to be more civilised than that, and by that I didn’t mean the classmates. I meant the way the rest of us have agreed to run things.
